Classic cowboy hats are composed of a high creased crown and wide brim that is shaped for protection from the sun. The finest fur cowboy hats of modern time are crafted in a similar fashion. Fur blends are assigned “X” ratings unique to each manufacturer which rates the blend. Typically, the higher the “X” number, the softer the fur pile feels and the easier it is to steam and shape.
Fur blends are typically a blend of wool felt, rabbit fur, and beaver fur. As the quality of the felt increases, more rabbit and beaver fur are used, while the amount of wool felt decreases. 100% Beaver fur is the highest quality fur cowboy hat. Other furs, such as Buffalo fur, are blended into some hats for its water repelling characteristics.
