Often referred to as a Bowler, Derbys were originally worn by British civil servants and bankers. Later it gained popularity with the American workingman. This hat, not the Cowboy hat or the Sombrero, was the most popular hat in the American West. Lawmen and outlaws such as Bat Masterson, Butch Cassidy, Black Bart, and Billy the Kid all wore these hats.
Comedians such as Charlie Chaplin, Laurel and Hardy, the Three Stooges were known for their derbies.
Recognizable by its rounded crown and pencil rolled narrow brim, this hat is timeless. Traditionally a felt hat, todays derbies are also available in cloth and straw.
