Sometimes referred to as just a Panama these hats are expertly crafted from the plaited leaves of the Ecuadorian Toquilla straw plant. Although crafted in Ecuador, during the 19th & 20th century these hats were first shipped to the Isthmus of Panama before departing for their final destinations in Asia, Europe, and the rest of the Americas. They were eventually named after their point of international.
These hats gained popularity after President Theodore Roosevelt was photographed wearing one during his trip to visit the Panama Canal Construction. Since then these hats have been well known for their fine craftsmanship and refined style. One of the most durable straws on the market, the panama is often associated with the tropics and summer lifestyle.
