Hatcountry brings you the most up-to-date styles in porkpie hats, with contemporary colors and hip interpretations. Porkpie hats are unmatched in conveying an image of “cool.” They are a type of fedora hat with a cylindrical crown that is flat on top, sometimes referred to as a telescope crown. Crafted out of straw, felt or cloth, they have a low crown, usually about 3 1/2” tall. The crown is generally creased, with a continuous indentation around the perimeter of the crown, and the center popping upward.
In the 1930s, this hat gained popularity, although the style dates back to before the American Civil War. Porkpie hats are named after the traditional English dish, pork pie, which they resemble. They were traditionally brown, adding to the resemblance.
This popular hat is often associated with Jazz and Blues musicians. American Architect Frank Lloyd Wright was known to wear porkpies. Actors such as Buster Keaton and Johnny Depp have added to its popularity.
