Known by some as simply a Panama these skillfully crafted hats are fabricated out of the plaited leaves of the Ecuadorian Toquilla straw plant. During the 19th & 20th century these hats were first shipped to the Isthmus of Panama after production in Ecuador and then transported to their final destinations in Asia, Europe, and the rest of the Americas. Over time these hats were renamed to bear the name of their international distribution.
President Theodore Roosevelt was photographed wearing one during his trip to visit the Panama Canal Construction. From that point forward the Panama hat had gained international fame. Well known for their fine craftsmanship and refined style the hat only gained in popularity from that point. One of the toughest yet intricate straws on the market, the panama is often associated with a tropic laid back lifestyle.
