Berets are soft flexible round flat hats, classified by some as a cap. They are available in a variety of fabrics such as wool, fur, knit, bamboo, and crocheted cotton. They date back to pre-Roman times where they were worn throughout Europe. Historically, berets have been a part of many countries military attire, usually adorned by either a cloth or metal badge. Culturally berets are associated with the arts, often worn by directors, painters, bohemians, intellectuals, and poets. They have been strongly associated with women’s fashion since the mid twentieth century.
